Are you a DIY car enthusiast looking for an easy way to replace transmission mount studs in your vehicle? If so, then you’ve come to the right place! In this blog post, we will walk you through the steps of replacing these important parts in your vehicle. So get ready to get your hands dirty and save yourself some money!
Preparing Your Vehicle
Before installing the new transmission mount studs, it is important to prepare your vehicle. You should start by jacking up the vehicle and supporting it with jack stands. Once the vehicle is secure, you can remove any motor/transmission mounts securing the transaxle to the frame and/or engine. Make sure to keep all the nuts and bolts in a safe place. After that, you can proceed with removing the old studs.
Removing the Old Studs
Removing the old studs is the next step in replacing transmission mount studs. To do so, you will need a large Milwaukee cut-off saw and two nuts. Start by cutting off the stud using the saw, then slide out the old mount. After that, inspect the mounting hole in the wheel hub for any mechanical issues and if needed, remove the wheel hub to add a new mount. Once done, use two jam nut style nuts to remove the studs. Put one nut almost all the way down, then tighten the lower nut against it to jamb it. Finally, lift the engine to get the lower studs out of the engine mount.
Installing the New Studs
After preparing the vehicle, it is time to install the new studs. The most common studs used in vehicles are GM Engine Mount Stud Bolts Flange Double Head M8X1.25X20 M10X1.5X30 New 11561121. These can be purchased online or at a local auto parts store. Make sure to double check the fit before proceeding with the installation. Once the correct studs have been acquired, it is time to get started.
Begin by sliding the portion of the new JBR transmission mount over the top of the studs and carefully pushing it into place. Then, with a little bit of play in the mount, slide the brace up and start the nuts on the studs. Next, take a second nut of the same size and thread pitch and install it on the same stud as you normally would. The two nuts should fit together snugly, providing a secure fit for your new transmission mount.
Checking for Proper Fit
After installing the studs and ensuring that the barrel is even with the transmission pad, it’s important to check for a proper fit. You can do this by measuring the height of the studs relative to the transmission pad. It should be a snug fit, but not too tight or too loose. You may also want to use a pry bar to gently test the fit of the studs. If it feels secure, you can proceed to the next step – making sure everything is secure.
Making Sure Everything is Secure
Before reinstalling the lower engine cover, it’s important to make sure that everything is securely in place. This includes checking the lug studs or wheel bolts to ensure that your tires are performing properly. Additionally, it’s important to check the transmission mount as well as any additional instructions that may be included with it. Finally, you need to make sure that the vehicle is securely supported before going underneath. Once all of these steps have been taken, you can move on to the next step.
Cleaning the Engine Bay
Once the engine bay has been cleared of the old studs, it’s time to start cleaning. Use a shop vacuum to pick up any dust or debris that may have been left behind. Once the dust has been removed, use a damp cloth to wipe down the engine bay and remove any grease or grime that may have accumulated. Make sure to get into all the nooks and crannies and leave no dirt behind. Once everything is clean and dry, it’s time to start installing the new studs.
Checking the Transmission Mount
Once you have removed the old studs, it’s time to check the transmission mount. To do this, crawl under the car and inspect the currently installed transmission mount. Make sure it’s in good condition, as any damage could cause issues when you reinstall the studs. If the mount looks worn or damaged, consider replacing it with a new one. You can find mounts for your vehicle at a local O’Reilly Auto Parts store or online. Once you have your new mount, slide it over the studs and onto the engine block. Make sure it’s properly fitted before tightening the bolts.
Replacing the Transmission Mount
Now that the old studs have been removed, it’s time to replace the transmission mount. First, you’ll need to locate the mount bracket, which is usually attached with a bolt and two studs, to the chassis. Depending on the orientation of the engine compared to the vehicle, this bracket can be found near one of the front wheels or between the engine and transmission. Once you have located the bracket, you’ll need to remove the two small rubber mounts securing the tranny to the chassis.
Reinstalling the Lower Engine Cover
Once you have checked the transmission mount and replaced it if needed, it’s time to reattach the lower engine cover. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, you’ll need to use a 19mm socket or a 17mm socket to install the new bolts on the flex plate. Once these are in place, start your vehicle (with PTO and transmission in neutral) and check that everything is running smoothly. Finally, reinstall the lower engine cover and make sure all bolts are securely tightened.
Testing Your Vehicle
Once you have installed the new studs and reassembled the engine bay, it’s time to test your vehicle. Start by taking it for a test drive. Make sure to take it on a variety of roads, including city, highway, and off-road. Pay special attention to how the engine feels and sounds when shifting gears, and any vibrations or shaking that may occur. If everything seems to be working correctly, then you have successfully replaced your transmission mount studs!
